Stephen Hudson was a teenager when the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike took place in 1968, but seeing the images of protest left a lasting impression on his creative mind as he set out for Paris and New York to build a reputation as a painter. When he returned from his inspirational journeys, Hudson began painting highly collectible images of Mississippi cotton fields and cotton pickers; steamships, cobblestones and dockworkers loading cotton bales; and downtown Memphis streets where the protestors had marched. Eventually, Stephen moved from painting, primarily water colors, to sculpture. Initially, his sculpture focused on roots music and the highly definable textured characters who played blues in Mississippi and Memphis. He reproduces his sculptures by casting a mold with hydrostone, one of the hardest and strongest of all gypsum cements. His work is represented in collections from California to New York, including The Blues & Legends Hall of Fame Museum. Stephen Hudson currently lives and works in Memphis and is currently working on a series of paintings that depict street scenes and historic buildings downtown.
